Mahabodhi Temple
The Mahabodhi Temple is the most remarkable temple in Bodhgaya. The basement of the temple is 48 sq ft and rises into the slender pyramidal form with the total height of 170 ft. The top of the temple is embellished with chhatras symbolizing the sovereignty of religion. The four towers on its four corners guard the temple. Within the sanctum sanctorum is a prodigious statue of Buddha in a sitting posture with his right hand touching the ground. The statue is made of black stone but gilded by the devotees. The entire courtyard of the temple has numerous varieties of stupas both votive and decorative.

Mahabodhi Tree
Towards the western side of the Mahabodhi Temple is the historically as well as religiously significant Bodhi Tree. The Bodhi Tree is held with such great reverence because it under this very tree that Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment some 2540 years ago and became Shakyamuni Buddha. The present Bodhi Tree is not the original tree but most probably the fifth descendant of the original tree. Some Buddhists consider the Bodhi Tree as the actual Buddha.
